"The artificial pancreas is an emerging technology to treat type 1 diabetes. The artificial pancreas, also known as closed-loop insulin delivery, is comprised of three components: an insulin pump, a continuous glucose monitor, and a control algorithm that modulates insulin delivery based on glucose levels. The goal of the artificial pancreas is to improve glycemic control, decrease low blood glucose levels, and reduce patient burden by responding to the glucose variability by modulating insulin delivery in real time. Determining important artificial pancreas tuning parameters, optimal basal rates and carbohydrate ratios, may improve the performance of the artificial pancreas and improve glycemic control. However, due to interpatient and intrapatient variabilities, determining these parameters is a challenging task. We have developed a learning algorithm that works alongside the artificial pancreas algorithm that updates basal rates and carbohydrate ratios daily. The learning algorithm examines daily glucose, insulin, and meal data to make changes in patients’ basal rates and insulin to carbohydrate ratios. The objective of this thesis was to test our artificial pancreas system with and without the learning algorithm using a randomized crossover clinical trial in children and adolescents at a diabetes camp"--
