Neuroepidemiology

Neuroepidemiology covers the foundations of neuroepidemiological research and the epidemiology of disorders primarily affecting the nervous system, as well as those originating outside the nervous system. The etiology of many important central nervous system disorders remains elusive. Even with diseases where the key risk determinants have been identified, better prevention and therapy is needed to reduce high incidence and mortality. Although evolving technologies for studying disease provide opportunities for such, it is essential for researchers and clinicians to understand how best to apply such technology in the context of carefully characterized patient populations. By paying special attention to methodological approaches, this volume prepares new investigators from a variety of disciplines to conduct epidemiological studies in order to discern the etiologic factors and underlying mechanisms that influence the onset, progression, and recurrence of CNS disorders and diseases. The book also provides current information on methodological approaches for clinical neurologists seeking to expand their knowledge in research. Includes coverage of the foundations of neuroepidemiological research and the epidemiology of disorders primarily affecting the nervous system, as well as those originating outside the nervous system Describes the most recent methodologies to define and quantify the burden of CNS disorders and to understand the underlying mechanisms, with neuroimaging and molecular methods receiving particular emphasis Offers extensive description of those neurological conditions that are secondary to other diseases whose incidence is on the rise because of longer survival rates Features chapters authored by leaders in the field from around the globe

This fine text provides a comprehensive overview of methods for epidemiologic and clinical research on neurological disorders. The book focuses on classic principles of study design in epidemiologic research, strategies for avoiding study biases, methods for conducting clinical trials and prognostic studies, and principles of evidence-based medicine in neurology. The text gives neurologists, epidemiologists, and their students the foundation for conducting rigorous epidemiologic and clinical research on neurologic disorders.

In recent years there have been significant advances in the knowledge of risk factors, gene-environment interactions, incidence, prevalence, outcomes, and prevention strategies of many neurological disorders. These advances have been accompanied by developments in study design methodologies and statistical analysis. This handbook bridges the gap between current neuroepidemiological knowledge and its evidence-based application in everyday practice.

This unique text offers practitioners both a review of the basic concepts of epidemiology, statistics, and clinical trials and a discussion of the epidemiologic aspects of many neurological diseases. Much of the information contained in Principles of Neuroepidemiology, such as cost-effectiveness analyses, has been difficult for busy practitioners to find in the past. By reading this book, physicians will acquire the skills they need to critically evaluate randomized trials that have affected the clinical practice of neurology. * Useful resource for

First published in 1991. This one-of-a-kind publication pays tribute to one of the pre-eminent scientists and educators in neuroepidemiology, Dr. Bruce Schoenberg. The goal of this book is to provide a comprehensive, state-of-the-art review of the work that has taken place in the field of neuroepidemiology over the last decade and address the challenges and prospects of the future. The work presented in this volume focuses on clinically relevant issues related to the magnitude, distribution, natural history, risk factors, treatment, and

Neuroepidemiology is a branch of epidemiology involving the study of neurological disease distribution and determinants of frequency in human populations. Neuroepidemiology has been perceived for a long time as a science of incidence, prevalence, risk factors, natural history and prognosis of neurological disorders. However, the other integral part of neuroepidemiology is experimental neuroepidemiology, which is research based on clinical trials of effectiveness or efficacy of various interventions in neurological disorders. Neuroepidemiological researches have been conducted since 1960’s, with the development

As a collection of neuroepidemiology papers, this book captures the range and excitement of the discipline. Researchers in the field have been at the forefront in the study of slow viruses, retroviral epidemiology, chronic neuroloical diseases, as well as injuries and other disabilities of the neurological system. The intersection of epidemiology, neurology, and behavioral/social science is a unique feature of this book. Furthermore, Molgaard's collection differs from similar titles in that it focuses on minorities and international work in

Neuroepidemiology in Tropical Health covers major neurological diseases of relevance in tropical settings and examines the specificities of epidemiology of neurological diseases in the context of tropical countries that face many challenges when compared to the developed world. Part One focuses on methods and their eventual specificities, and how such methods, like sampling, can be adapted for specific scenarios. Parts Two and Three discuss environmental factors and their consequences for neurology in the tropical world, as well as large geographical
